We were lucky enough to get a mix from the oldest son to the legendary DJ Jam Master Jay for the SeratoCast mix series. Jam Master J'Son is carrying on his fathers legacy as a top class DJ and producer, the current Tour DJ for RUN-DMC and Tour DJ for Mann.

Check out Jam Master J'Son's mix below and a quick interview to get to know him a little better.

OP Miller: Tell us where you are at right now and why are you there?

Jam Master J'Son: I currently reside in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area.  I live closer to my family in Georgia and it is one of the music capitals of the world. Living in Atlanta allows me to literally live within and immerse myself in the culture of music.

OP: Top 5 records doing it for you right now?

JMJS: Yung Book feat. London Jae - H.I.T.V.

Moneybag Yo feat. Yo Gotti - Section
Rich The Kid feat. Jaden Smith - Like This
Lil’ Brudda Haitian - Gone Bad
Montana of 300 - Ice Cream Truck

OP: First DJ Setup, what was it?

JMJS: My first DJ setup was the Numark NS7 original.

OP: Favorite mixtape you've made.

JMJS: My favorite mixtape I’ve ever made, the world has never heard.
It’s a mixtape tribute to my late father Jam Master Jay.  One day I plan on releasing it for the world to hear.  Who knows? I may remake it with original songs with so many artists and DJs on there, because my father influenced so many people musically and helped so many people establish themselves in the music industry during his life.  It can be a mixtape/original album project featuring the biggest stars in music.  Could you imagine Rev Run and DMC doing new songs with Jay-Z and Drake for the project?  It would be like music time crystals; sounds forever frozen in time.

OP: Favorite City in the world and why?

JMJS: I’ve been blessed to perform all over the world in so many countries and cities.  To narrow it down, I would have to say Bangkok, Thailand.  The place is beautiful and the people showed Iyaz and myself so much love when we performed there.  If Warner Bros. Pictures ever films “Hangover 4: The Return To Bangkok” I have to be in the scenes in filmed in Bangkok.

OP: What are you working on currently?

JMJS: I am currently working on beginning some mixtape DJ projects in the hip-hop genre, a video project with popping dancer Marquese Scott, an EDM album, and filming a series of commercial’s for Numark.

Preferences found in Serato DJ’s Setup menu are often an overlooked option when it comes to MIDI mapping.

Have a read below of our favourite 5 MIDI-mappable setup options you can map straight to your controller, removing the need to enter the SETUP screen.

*To map any of the following features click on the MIDI button to enable MIDI mapping then click on the SETUP menu and navigate to the appropriate tab.

Start/Stop time

These options are handy if your Serato hardware does not have a dedicated start/stop knob, or when using one or more decks in INT mode. This parameter will give you control over the time it takes tracks to reach their normal speed when started or the time it takes for them to stop, great for creating different braking effects.

Quantize Value

Scroll through the Quantize beat values to select the setting most suited to your performance. Have a lesser value when wanting to go crazy on the cues then move it up to a larger value when wanting to simply drop your cues on the 1.

Anti-drift

A great tool to have enabled the majority of the time, but you may want to have the option to toggle this off at times when you’d like to make subtle pitch or platter movements.

AM mode

Super heroes don’t have to enter a setup screen to enable their powers - have AM mode ready at the press of a button to make your track names disappear.

Pitch N Time DJ

PnT DJ provides the ability to shift your track’s BPM by huge values and still retain great quality, however you may wish to have PnT DJ turned off while scratching as it can interfere with the desired sound you’re trying to create.

*Mapping the ‘enable Pnt DJ’ checkbox in the SETUP menu will allow you to toggle PnT DJ on and off - with the handy addition of keep Serato’s Keylock feature on when Pnt DJ has been toggled off*. This will give a smoother, less noticeable switch compared to toggling PnT off without keylock.

Serato CEO, Young Ly, says, “Over the years we’ve seen huge growth in the crossover between DJing and producing so it feels like a natural next step for us to return to the world of production. And in turn it made sense to leverage our successful plugin, Pitch ‘n Time.

Serato Sample’s feature set accommodates the needs of producers wanting a powerful, convenient sampling tool and also provides a familiar, intuitive workflow for DJs to delve into beat making.

SeratoCast Mix 64 is bought to us by the Super Smash Broz. The DJ Duo and brothers consisting of DJ Fresco x DJ Nomz have put together a SMASHING mix of everything hot in Hip Hop right now. Check this mix and get a pen and paper ready for your new playlist.

OP Miller, our Artist Relations manager from Studio 2 in NYC also asked the Super Smash Broz a couple of questions about what they're up to, what they're feeling and what they've got in the pipeline. Check it out below to find out more, and get the goss on their upcoming project.

OP: Tell us where you are at right now and why are you there?

SSB: We are in Boston right now, Roxbury to be exact. We are here because this is our hometown - we love the city and are determined to put it on the map.

OP: Top 5 records doing it for you right now?

SSB: It's tough, because there's so much good music always coming out. However, I'd have to say the top 5 records doing it would be: Sahbabii - Pull Up Wit Ah Stick (this song is gonna be everywhere by the end of the summer), Ed Sheeran - Shape of You, Davido - If, Future - Mask OffMigos - Slippery (feat. Gucci Mane)

OP: First DJ Setup, what was it?

SSB: Our dad used to DJ back in the day, so we used to play around with his equipment. However, our first DJ setup that belonged to us was probably a Numark Mixtrack Pro.

OP: Favourite mixtape you've made. (Doesn't have to be released, eg for a friend or lover)

SSB: I think the answers are different for both of us.

Noma Nomz:Get Your Vibes Right 2. I like to break records, and I feel like a lot of people reacted well and caught on to our wave in our city around then. https://soundcloud.com/muyifresco/getyourvibesrightv2

Muyi Fre$co: My favorite mix is probably Get Your Vibes Right 5. I'm a perfectionist, and though this mix isn't perfect, it's really a dope look at our growth as DJs since we first started. https://soundcloud.com/supersmashbroz/getyourvibesrightvol5

OP: Favourite City in the world and why?

SSB: We're biased, so we Idon't necessarily want to say Boston. So besides Boston, probably Lagos, Nigeria or Toronto. Lagos because we're of Nigerian descent (Omo Naija!) and there's nothing like being around your people. Everyone is so authentic and the food is marvelous. Toronto is up there too because that city and its people are so beautiful. It's a great melting pot, super diverse and the natives are so welcoming.

OP: What are you working on currently?

SSB: Currently, we're busy finishing our upcoming project, titled Family Cookout. It's essentially a for us, by us tape featuring the top talent coming out of Massachusetts. The Boston music scene has been slept on for far too long and we feel like it's up to us to help curate the vibes and sounds that our city's scene has. So much of our talent doesn't have the right platform to get noticed by the masses and we hope to help change that. The project will be releasing a bit later this year, so be on the lookout for it! Music lovers and DJs, get ready to get your vibes right and absolutely have these songs in your Serato!

Check out our new single "Adjacent" coming out on our new project this year.

You may have noticed that over the past year we have released a series of videos called From the Studio.

This is curated by our Artist Relations teams at our LA and NY Studios (and when they're on the road).

We have so many artists come through our studios to catch up with the team and get up to date on everything Serato, that we thought it would be an opportunity missed if we didn't get the camera gear out and film some of these artists giving us a quick routine when we can.

Check out our From the Studios playlist below for some routines from the series, and keep an eye on our Facebook page for more to come.

Get familiar with Kris Karns. The Denver-born DJ aficionado holding down the trifecta of battle titles - a DMC Championship, x3 Thre3style wins, and a runner-up spot of VH1’s “Master of the Mix”.

He’s produced tracks for Mayor Hawthorne, has toured with Yelawolf, and is a current member for electronic outfit Pretty Lights.

We’ve always admired Chris’ refreshing approach to DJing, and the way he uses Serato. So we thought we’d catch a moment with him to talk about it a little more.

Check our interview with Chris below for his take on touring with a live band (Pretty Lights), the run down of his setup, and how he incorporates Serato DJ, Pitch ‘n Time DJ for added key functionality, and Ableton Link.

In our month packed full of SeratoCast mixes, next up for SeratoCast mix number 62 is oriJanus of Soulection and emcee on WordLyfe.

oriJanus brings the vibes on this one with a stack of his own tracks, remixes and token Soulection vibes.

We also asked him a couple of questions to find out what he's on at the moment. Read below.

Matt Perry: Tell us where you are at right now and why are you there?

oriJanus: I'm at the Serato Studio 3 in Little Tokyo recording a Seratocast on my birthday. :)

MP: Top 5 records doing it for you right now?

OJ: 1. Thundercat - Friend Zone, my friend Mono/Poly produced it and he's from Bakersfield as I am.

2. This unreleased Zikomo remix that's going to be put out soon. Sssssh, lol.

3. Terrace Martin - Valdez off Crenshaw, I STILL play this song religiously.

4. SiR - W$ Boi, great song that tells a more common story. SiR is such a cool dude.

5. Temu - Boogaloo Blues, that bassline....ungh!

MP: First DJ Setup, what was it?

OJ: First setup I had was a pair of Yamaha Ion turntables my grandma bought me from a JC Penny's catalog for Christmas when I was about 10 years old. They were really fragile and the stylus picked up any little touching of the tables but it got me through, lol.

MP: Favourite mixtape you've made. (Doesn't have to be released, eg for a friend or lover)

OJ: I recorded a mix of my favorite hip-hop tracks as a kid (Black Moon, Smif-N-Wessun, Wu, Jamal, Redman etc.) that I've been playing out. Might put it out someday, lol.

MP: Favourite City in the world and why?

OJ: Miami! I've been there twice in the past few months and I love it. I'm puerto rican so I was welcomed with open arms. I loved the latin conga bands on the corner and the women!

MP: What are you working on currently?

OJ: Currently recording and working on my self-produced, debut rap project entitled "7000 Auburn - EP". Been taking me quite some time but I'm getting it out this year. Be on the lookout for that!

Serato May 16, 2017

We have been very lucky this month to receive mixes from a bunch of artists to get the SeratoCast mix series back into full swing for 2017.

This week we received a mix from the talented Orange Calderon who brings a refreshing mix of brand new and classic Hip Hop/Rap. Perfect for your next party or get the office turnt up proper.

We also asked her a  a few questions about what she's been upto lately. Check it out below.

Matt Perry: Tell us where you are at right now and why are you there?

Orange Calderon: Live from the trap house. I literally just finished recording this mix so I’m still sitting at my setup, answering these Q’s before I send it all off, Loll.

MP: Top 5 records doing it for you right now?

OC: There’s so much music coming out right now, it literally changes every week. This week I’m excited about this Omniboi Remix of Bad And Boujee. I’ve moved on to other records off the new Migos album, but that remix is so fire. I really love ‘Shining’ Dj Khaled, Beyonce,& Jay-Z. Slide - Calvin Harris ft. Frank Ocean & Migos is a great record. Jazz Cartier - Tempted, Wizkid - Sweet Love, Clean Bandit’s remix of Flume - Say It ft. Tove Lo thats 6 and its killing me to not keep going lol, 5 is not enough!

MP: First DJ Setup, what was it?

OC: Pioneer DDJ-SX. A little over 2.5 years ago a couple friends finally got it into my head that I should be doing this. I walked into Guitar Center a couple days later and picked one up. Everything I needed to get started immediately for under $1,000. Clutch.

MP: Favourite mixtape you've made. (Doesn't have to be released, eg for a friend or lover)

OC: Probably 'Spain in September’. I felt like a vessel during that recording process. I don’t remember making one active decision, it’s like it made itself. & it very accurately capsulizes my experience, sonically, while over there. It’s a true soundtrack to that trip.

MP: Favourite City in the world and why?

OC: That’s tough, but if I can only have one I'd have to say Paris. As a DJ, something just clicked my first time over there. I’d been progressing at a steady pace up to that point around month 4/5. I spun a couple gigs, went out to the clubs to see their DJs, & I remember leaving early one night so inspired that I had to get home to my equipment. I was still so new then that there was just a level of unsureness I had about it all. Something clicked that night and I understood something I hadn’t understood before then. I wasn’t scared anymore, and that allowed me to leap ahead several levels on the learning curve. Paris will be special to me forever for that.

MP: What are you working on currently?

OC: I have another mix I need to get done for a late March drop, & currently mapping out these next couple travel runs through Asia, Africa, & Europe. Other than that I’m 'spring cleaning' the brand, if you will. I've got new things coming on all fronts from merch and the Radio Show, to a new site, app, and video content. It’s quite the undertaking so I don’t wanna say too much before I get it all done. :)

DJ MIST

DJ MIST

DJ Mist from Dub Academy in Texas, shows us how to "Chop" using the Slicer, and Screw tracks by setting the control tone to 45 in the Serato DJ setup menu.

Check out the Pro Tip HERE

From wikipedia -

"Chopped and screwed (sometimes called screwed and chopped or slowed and throwed) refers to a technique of remixing hip hop music which developed in the Houston hip hop scene in the early 1990s. This is accomplished by slowing the tempo down to between 60 and 70 quarter-note beats per minute and applying techniques such as skipping beats, record scratchingstop-time, and affecting portions of the music to make a "chopped-up" version of the original.

DJ Screw is largely recognized as the innovator behind the chopped and screwed genre.

DJ Screw's key technique involved playing the same record on both turntables with a delay between them of one beat and quickly moving the crossfader side to side. This created an effect where the words or beats in a song were repeated without interrupting its tempo.

Today it is still common to see screwed and chopped versions of mixtapes and albums released alongside the regular speed versions, sometimes in a double disc format with one disc screwed and the other regular speed."

With the release of Serato DJ 1.9.6 comes additions and improvements for DVS users. DJ’s who spin on turntables will find at least one or all of the below feature updates very beneficial.

Anti-Drift

Using turntables gives a lot of platter control to the user, but it doesn’t come without a cost. Wow/Flutter is a common nuisance that you'll experience when playing vinyl, caused by variables of the turntable or vinyl itself, resulting in unexpected BPM fluctuations.

The introduction of Anti-Drift combats wow/flutter by calculating the rotational speed of the vinyl and ignoring every abnormal rotation by applying an average. After a few rotations, your deck's BPM will be sitting at a stable number, resulting in a much more reliable beat-mixing experience.

You can enable Anti-Drift by checking the box found in the CD/Vinyl tab of the SETUP screen.

Smart Sync

Controllers have had an abundance of practical and performance enhancing features since their beginning. Smart Sync is one of the more commonly used features that DVS users have been patiently waiting for.

Smart sync is the more intelligent, more popular brother of simple sync who can lock track’s beatgrids in sequence and have decks follow the BPM of the master deck.

Enable Smart Sync by checking the box found in the DJ Preferences tab of the SETUP screen.

Needle Drop/Sticker Lock improvements

We’ve dialled in the sensitivity of our needle dropping features allowing our turntable users to utilize these handy tricks in their room, a club or battle with precision and assurance.

To enable Needle Dropping and Sticker Lock, enable the features you wish to use from the CD/Vinyl tab in the SETUP screen.

DJ's wanting to use DVS that own DVS Upgradable hardware or Club Kit Mixers, will need to purchase the DVS Expansion pack from either inside the Expansion Packs & Activations window of Serato DJ or from the Serato Online Store.

Serato DJ 1.9.6 introduces new additions and improvements to the existing looping feature. Creating a reliable, user-friendly tool that every DJ can benefit from. New performance enhancing tools are also added in the release letting users disable setting Cues and save Favorite FX Banks.

LOOPING

Looping can be utilized by every type of DJ, from a practical use such as extending the intro/outro of a track to performance enhancing techniques such as energy building rolls. Serato DJ 1.9.6 improves on the existing looping feature, providing deeper Loop management and bug fixes, resulting in a more user-friendly and reliable tool for DJ’s.

Watch this video below on Chronological Loops + Reordering Loops.

Chronological Cues and Loops

When the "Sort Cues and Loops Chronologically" option is turned on, each track’s saved Loops and Cues will be displayed in the order they appear throughout the track, rather than the order they were created in. This heavily requested feature simplifies the workflow of saving and triggering Cues and Loops.

Reordering Loops

After creating your Loops you may wish to have them saved in a specific order. This addition to the looping feature will let you drag saved loops to the position of your choice.

Feature Improvements

We’ve fixed an issue where scratching will no longer cause the playhead to jump outside of an active Loop, providing a reliable feature for scratch DJ’s to use in creative performances.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS

Enable/Disable Hot Cues

We’ve brought back the option from Scratch Live to enable and disable setting Hot Cues. Turning off this feature will stop the frustration of accidentally setting cues on unwanted spaces for those that thrash performance pads. You can toggle this setting in the DJ Preferences tab of the SETUP screen.

When Hot Cues are disabled, Cue Points can only be set by pressing control + numbers 1-0 on your computer's keyboard. Cue Points will not be set with the press of a single button/key on your hardware or keyboard.

Favorite FX Banks

You can now have two entirely different FX Banks saved, available to load whenever needed.

Each bank when saved will remember the FX loaded with each parameter that was set. This is useful when wanting to switch between two configurations. For example, you could have Bank A for Single FX and Bank B for Multi FX, or Bank A for subtle FX such as Reverb, Filter and Bank B for performance FX such as Pitch Looper, Tremolo.

Once you've got a Favorite FX Bank saved you go on to use other FX inside Serato DJ, then recalling your favorite is as easy as clicking back on the A or B bank button.

Serato DJ has a number of built-in FX, or you can purchase the whole Serato FX Expansion Pack for only USD 29 from the Serato Online Store or in-app within Serato DJ.

Late last year, Serato reached out to 3 individuals to help film a quick video, showcasing a live use of LINK (the new wireless midi protocol connection created by Ableton) which is now available in Serato DJ.

We wanted to highlight the three individuals on their chosen platforms, 2 on Serato DJ and 1 on Ableton Live. Stro, 14kt and Manwell, had all known of each others work and in some cases worked together before, so the chemistry was already there.

The 3 gentlemen, came to the Serato Studio the day before, we explained the rules, which were...

  • You all have to be Linked together via LINK
  • There has to be a Tempo Change at some point
  • You have to use your own music

They had no problem in working a routine out together and were pretty impressed at the way you could link the 3 setups (Turntables, Controller, and Ableton) up to enable a defined shared tempo. Stro on Ableton Push 2, Manwell on the DJMs9 and turntables, 14kt on the Roland DJ808 controller.

Check out the finished product below.

After the performance, we asked the boys on their thoughts of LINK.

Stro - "This situation was the first time I've used it. Was a pretty simple setup. Straight to the point provided the network is capable."

14k - "This was my first time using it in this performance. It didn't take long to understand how it works. It was pretty simple and an extremely helpful feature."

Thanks to Ableton, and Rome for their support and shout out to Z-Trip who stopped by to check out what was going down.

One of our planet’s most pressing issues calls for people in every field to play their part. The social influence and presence of a DJ make them an important figure in spreading awareness and encouraging response to Climate Change.

We talk to Sammy Bananas, the founding member of DJs for Climate Action to find out more about the group’s purpose. We discuss how you can join the coalition alongside other members such as A-Trak and RJD2, and what songs he’d have in his Climate Change mixtape. Read the interview below.

For those of us who may not be familiar with what "DJs for Climate Action" is, can you tell us about what you are trying to achieve?

We're working to use the power of music to amplify our community’s role in protecting the planet’s future.  This includes using the cultural visibility of DJs, and the unique way music can bind and motivate people, to promote awareness and provoke response to the Climate Crisis.  We’re encouraging DJ colleagues and fans alike to join the Climate Movement to help shift our world back to a sustainable path.

How did you come to be a part of this project, and what was your inspiration?

I originally started it in '08 after my touring schedule picked up and I was flying all over the place.  At the time I was thinking a lot about the environmental impact of that lifestyle and it forced me to learn more about the Climate issue.  Ultimately, we’re not asking people to stop flying, but figure out what we can collectively do to move the needle in the right direction.  That might be things like fundraising for established advocacy groups like NRDC, or organizing DJs to participate in the upcoming People’s Climate March on April 29th.

What other dj's are involved that are as passionate about helping slow climate change?

You can find some of the most well-known members of the group featured in the new minute-long clip we launched last week!  DJs like A-Trak, Soul Clap, Louisahhh!!!, RJD2.  Right now this Pledge for Action campaign is really about getting our message out there and welcoming other people to join.  You don’t have to be a big name to take part, you just have to care about the issue and what you can do.  As we grow the coalition we’ll be able to put on more events and do bigger projects to increase our impact.  You can take part at djs4ca.com/pledge !

Traveling is a big part of a successful DJ's life, do you think this sometimes gives you a different perspective on issues such as Climate Change?

Well first off, I now know there are lots of successful and talented DJs who never travel. BUT it is true that the biggest names are constantly on the road.  For me, playing all over the world gave me the perspective that it’s actually a smaller place than you think.  It breaks down the differences between people, shows how interconnected we all are and cements that we have to work together to solve the issues of the planet.

If you had to make a Climate Action themed mix, what would be your top 5 song choices?

  1. Public Enemy - Fight the power
  2. Roy Ayres - Everybody Loves the Sunshine
  3. Earth People - Dance
  4. Caribou - Sun
  5. Michael Jackson - Heal The World

Where can people learn more about how to help prevent Climate Change?

When used with the Serato DJ Club Kit (Serato DJ & Serato DVS Expansion pack license bundle), the Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS and DJM-900NXS2 mixers are available to use plug-and-play with Serato DJ.

Also available are the Pioneer DJM-850, Rane MP2015, Allen & Heath Xone:DB2, DB4 or 43C.

This plug-and-play functionality means you can connect your laptop with Serato DJ directly to the mixer without the need of an external sound card/interface and have control over both the mixer and Serato DJ features.

Even if you don't own these mixers, but you use them in the club, you can still trial or purchase the Club Kit to use them with Serato DJ.

It's easy to use these mixers with Serato DJ.

  1. Download and install the latest version of Serato DJ.
  2. Connect your hardware and activate a FREE 14 day trial in the My Serato window in-app, or purchase and activate a Club Kit license bundle.
  3. Install the drivers by following the prompt in the side panel.
  4. Start DJing!

Here's a few things to note:

  • If you already have a Serato DJ license you’ll be able to connect to Serato DJ. However, to have platter control you will need to purchase the DVS expansion pack unless you’re using HID mode with supported accessories.
  • Drivers for these mixers are bundled within Serato DJ. If you have trouble connecting after driver install, try hot-plugging the USB cable or restarting your machine.
  • Ensure your mixer has the latest firmware installed for best performance.
  • "Primary Decks" options are available in the Audio tab of the Setup screen to change the inputs/outputs of the hardware that are to be used for Decks 1 and Decks 2 in the software.

Pioneer DJM-900NXS, NXS2 and DJM-850 specific

  • These mixers have a 'Setup Inputs' button in the Audio tab of Serato DJ Setup. You can set your mixer inputs to Phono or Line here, as the mixer doesn't have hardware controls.
  • You can record the software mix in a similar way to the DJM-900SRT. Open the driver panel and select 'REC OUT' in the dropdown for one of the channels to give it up for recording. In the Serato DJ record panel, select the same channel as the REC source - you're good to go!
  • In order to use software features that require MIDI such as Serato Video faders, EQ effects and EQ coloured waveforms, users will need to turn on MIDI on the mixer. This is a button labelled ‘On/Off’ in the MIDI section on the top right of the mixer.

Day three:

Saturday had a slew of big name appearances with none bigger than the two legendary Invisibl Skratch Piklz - Mix Master Mike and Q-Bert performing together at the Pioneer DJ booth. The booth was packed to see these legends demonstrate why they are the innovators of turntable culture and still revolutionising the limits of it.

DJ Paul of Three6Mafia was emphatically impressed with the DJ808 at the Roland booth, accompanied by the OG Mannie Fresh.

Serato’s own Dstrukt had an incredible performance there as well, which we are all very proud of and you can check that out HERE

After the convention closed we headed over to the after party in Orange, where the SCVCG (Serato control vinyl collectors group) were holding their annual NAMM event.

There was a very special announcement and debut of the forthcoming 7” Serato Control Vinyl release. You’ll likely start seeing these grace the turntables of portablists and donut lovers worldwide!

Check out the Seratohq snapchat for more highlights and in the moment info for the last day today!

Day two:

Starting off the day at the InMusic booth we got a chance to see the new Denon Prime Series (http://www.denondj.com/prime-series) . The VL12 turntable was really fresh with a great build quality, feel and adjustable light that surrounds the platter (a very nice touch). The SC5000 CD Player was again great build and feels amazing to cut on. The platter has a lovely smooth feel and weight to it, making it ideal for those that like to cut and scratch. Last but not least the X1800 Mixer had a great clear sound and clean layout too. Should be a lot of fun to play on these if you find them in the club or on display somewhere.

Over at the Roland both 3 Style USA champ did his incredible routine ( https://news.djcity.com/watch-trayze-perform-with-rolands-dj-808-controller/ ) on the DJ808 live for the NAMM audience.

Lots of Scratching going down at the Mixars booth again, with performances all day long. The Quattro and Primo looking lovely behind the glass. It will be exciting to see how it performs once it gets a proper release. https://serato.com/latest/blog/20201/introducing-the-mixars-primo-and-quattro-forthcoming-in-serato-dj

The Legendary Grandmaster DXT, Jazzy Jay, Keith Shocklee (Bombsquad) and Breakbeat Lou were in attendance and it was great to see them checking out all the new goodies and walk the floor.

Shout out to DJ Revolution, Mike Relm, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, DJ Eko and Expo, for coming through to say hi!

It should be exciting to see who is set to perform at the Pioneer booth today for Day 3! I’ve heard it might be invisibl? ;)

NAMM 2017 Blog

The Serato Squad started the day in Anaheim, California for Day one of the NAMM 2017 convention. Located in the massive convention centre the 4 day event is spread out on several floors and thousands of square feet of floor space.

There was a lot of interest in the many new products on display for the first time, such as the Reloop RMX90 4 channel mixer that was getting worked over in real life for all to see by the legendary Chris Karns. That poor fader had its fair share of abuse to prove it’s durability.

The Roland Booth on the Second floor was jam packed with superstar DJ’s and producers like LA Legend Battlecat who took a liking to the Roland DJ808 and had a quick impromptu Jam on it with Dj Descry to assist.

The Beat Junkies, Jazzy Jeff and a collection of “The Playlist Retreat” Alumni, (Stro Elliot, Eric Lau, Excel, Ferno, Dayne Jordan and Daniel Crawford) where there to witness the Beat Junkie’s Melo D put the DJ808 through its paces from a turntablist and beat junkie perspective.

If you were downstairs you would have also got a chance to check out the Canadian 2016 3style Champ Trapment demo the DJM-S9 at the Pioneer Booth, which also had the brand new DDJ-SZ2 on display along with the newly supported NXS2 kit working with Serato DJ.

Finally over at the MIXARS booth Eliza May, Big Wiz and some guest DJ’s all jamming out in between. There was the new QUATTRO on display too.

Roland had Sinden closed the evening out with an incredible performance utilizing the Sequencer and Sampler on the 808 flexing his production chops live.

It was great to see lots of familar faces at the show, shout out to our friends at DJ City and Rekordbuddy.

Previously a hidden Scratch Live "easter egg" feature, AM Mode is now an official  Serato DJ feature. This feature allows you to hide the track details in the virtual deck from potential sniping playlist poachers.

Either enable this as an option in setup or quickly use the keyboard shortcut ALT + M to turn on / off. This feature hides the track and artist name on all playing decks.

Clicking on the track details area will quickly reveal your current playing track, but only for a split second.

Download Serato DJ and try it out for yourself!

The most fundamental part of DJing is mixing two tracks together. Mastery of this basic skill will set you up to be able to develop a full repertoire of DJ techniques with a solid foundation.

Here's a quick demo on the basics of mixing tracks in Serato DJ Intro. Take a look and give it a go yourself!

Hello everyone! My name's Logan, I'm one of the Product Planners here at Serato. I'm also a DJ. I know the software quite well. I want to share a few little things in Serato DJ that I couldn't do without.

COMMAND + L

This might be the best thing that has ever happened in life. When in your library, press CONTROL + L on your keyboard to jump you highlighted track focus to the track that is loaded to your deck. Press it once for Deck 1, press it again to jump to the track loaded to Deck 2 and so on. That might not sound that amazing but it's insanely handy. For example you're in a large crate, and you are sorting by BPM, and you scroll really far away, then you're like 'actually nah I'm going to keep it at this tempo', BOOM just press CONTROL + L and you'll jump straight back to where you were in the library which was the last loaded track. (Which is A$AP Ferg - Shabba 60 BPM)

PITCH LOOPER

This is the funnest thing since Loop Rolls. Load up Pitch Looper, set your beats to something small (1/2 - 1/8), and set your depth knob to 12 o'clock. Then turn it on and turn the depth known down the full left. It gives a breaker type effect, and sounds awesome on snares. Make sure you always start it from 12 o'clock though and turn it up or down.

Note: Pitch Looper is one of the effects in the Back Pack, which you can purchase from within the 'Online' window of the Serato DJ application.

ADDING A SONG FROM iTUNES

I don't have 'Show iTunes Library' on because I organise things differently there than I do in SDJ. But when I purchase a track from iTunes and I want to get it into SDJ the quickest way is to just jump into the Setup Screen, enable 'Show iTunes Library', open the 'Purchased' playlist, and just throw the track into a SDJ crate. Now when I go and turn 'Show iTunes Library' off, the iTunes library will disappear except for the file(s) that I added to a Serato crate. Sound obvious but it's just a quick way of adding only certain iTunes songs into your Serato library really fast.

MOVE UP/DOWN YOUR CRATES WITHOUT LOSING TRACK FOCUS

Lets say you're scrolling through tracks in crate with the keyboard arrows, and you want to scroll through a different crate. You'd have to use your mouse and click on the new crate, then click on the track listing again, and then start scrolling. A first world problem sure, but a really quick way of doing this is just using SHIFT + CONTROL + DOWN/UP. This will change what crate you are scrolling through without moving focus from the track list area. Great trick if you are using hardware that doesn't have library control. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean.

COMBO FADE ECHO

Echoing out is pretty much the Basketball layup of the DJ world. Standard as. Combo Fade Echo is awesome for performing a nice clean echo out. Just set how much Low-pass or High-pass filter you want on the echo and then hit ON, and it will instantly echo out using whatever beat value you have selected. Just this effect and a crossfader would be the best controller ever.

Note: Combo Fade Echo is one of the effects in the Wolf Pack, which you can download for free within the 'Online' window of the Serato DJ application.

UNDO LAST TRACK LOAD

It's pretty easy to accidentally load a track to the deck that is playing aloud. It's always going to happen. A quick press of CONTROL + Z will instantly undo the last track load AND take you back to exactly where you would've been in the last track have you NOT loaded it. It's so smooth you can even use it as an effect. If there's one trick in Serato DJ that you learn in should be this.

MAKE NEW MUSIC APPEAR IN SDJ EVERY TIME YOU OPEN IT

Serato DJ has a feature called 'Auto Import'. Basically anything you throw into this folder will appear in a 'Latest Imported' crate when you next open SDJ. That's kinda cool, but something you can do that makes it even better is to set it up so that any audio file you download from the internet shows up in your SDJ library the next time you open it. All you really need to do is open your internet browser, go to the browser settings and point the 'downloads' to your 'Auto Import' folder located in User -> Music -> Serato -> Auto Import. Now you'll download something, and it'll show up in a 'Latest Imported' crate in SDJ. However, because everything you download from the internet isn't going to be audio files you want to DJ with, you should also make a shortcut/alias of your 'Auto Import' folder (just right-click on it) and put it where you usually keep your downloads folder. Then you'll have access to all your downloaded content like normal, except the audio files will be auto-imported when you open SDJ. This 'technique' won't work for everyone but if you download a lot of music it an be a really fast way to get it into your library for sorting out.

BRAKING

If you are using a controller, you can make it so that stopping a track sounds like stopping vinyl. Just go to the DJ PREFERENCES tab of the Setup screen and set your braking to about 9'oclock. Now when you stop a track it will sound like a turntable, quite a cool effect. Sounds better with echo combined.

Serato Dec 6, 2016

While Sync is a great tool for simply keeping your mixes in time, it also has other benefits including the ability to do drastic tempo changes to completely change the vibe of your sets.

Note: This is for using the Smart Sync feature in particular.

Whether you're looking to ramp up the energy on the D Floor, recklessly start playing hard techno or just settle the mood if it looks like your punters need a rest, Sync in Serato DJ lets you do this really smoothly. With correct Beatgrids set on your tracks, you can use Sync to have two tracks in time and adjust the pitch simultaneously for a gradual transition.

With Pitch 'n Time DJ enabled, you can also lock the root key of the tracks and it'll sound near perfect.

Say you're playing a 60 BPM rap song, and you're wanting to switch up to something a bit harder, around the 135-140 mark. It'd be easy if it was 60 >120, as you can just mix in double time but in this case as it's not a divisible BPM, you'll need to create a transition.

One way of doing this is to find a breakdown or hook section in the previous song to loop, while mixing in Sync with the intro of the new track you're bringing in. As Sync is enabled, while you start to blend, you can start ramping up the tempo which will affect both decks simultaneously.

  1. Playing 60BPM track on left deck
  2. Load 135 BPM track on right deck
  3. Hit the Sync button on the right deck (it should drop this tempo to 120 BPM)
  4. Start mixing and then make a loop on the left deck.
  5. Now ramp the tempo up while you mix which should increase the tempo on both tracks in time :)

This will work for many other tempo combinations and you should experiment to see what works well for you.

For many DJs, iTunes has been the primary tool for managing a digital music library. There have been a few questions recently around iTunes integration and the benefits of using Serato DJ as your primary music library tool. Here's a quick overview of iTunes library support in Serato DJ, pros and cons, as well as answers to commonly asked questions.

FAQ

What's the best way to manage my music?

iTunes can be a nice way to manage a digital music library if you listen to your music over multiple devices and purchase music there. There's a few reasons you might want to manage your DJ music library directly in Serato DJ though:

One of the biggest reasons to manage your DJ library in Serato DJ is for consistency. As we only read the iTunes Music Library.xml file and can't write back to it, if you use iTunes you have to manage all of your tag changes, playlist management etc. inside iTunes.

Relying on a third party application for your music management is also a risk. With everything in Serato DJ, you have less moving parts which will give you peace of mind when there are updates.

Lastly, it's good to manage your music in Serato DJ and use this as your music player because it can help you listen to your music from a DJ perspective. You can add cue points to your tracks, set loops and do a lot of prep work, as well as being able to quickly add tracks to crates as you hear them. You never know when you're going to hear a banger in your library you have forgotten about!

Can I play my Apple Music files in Serato DJ?

You're not able to play streaming tracks from Apple Music in Serato DJ.

How do I add my music to Serato DJ directly?

This is really simple :) You can do this two ways.

  1. Use the Files panel. This can be found in Serato DJ next to the Browse, History, & Prepare panel buttons. Use this panel to browse through your hard drive and find your music. Once you find tracks or folders you'd like to add to Serato DJ, just drag these into the main library window. You can also load tracks to the virtual deck from here - once you do this, they will stay in your library.
  2. Drag files from Finder / Windows Explorer into the Serato DJ library. Just minimise Serato DJ and drag tracks from here into the library. It's easy!

Once you have music in your library you can analyse your files in the Offline Player as well as build Serato Crates and Smart Crates to organise your music.

Learn more about using Smart Crates in Serato DJ here.

Hot Tip!

When you read your library from iTunes and add tracks to a crate in Serato DJ, these will now be in the Serato DJ library. If you stop reading from iTunes, the tracks will remain in your library. This is a great way to import your entire library into Serato DJ if you want to stop using iTunes.

Just make a Crate, select everything in the "all" crate and drag this into a new crate. Once you've done that, disable "read iTunes library" and your music will be in Serato DJ.

Before playing music in any Serato software, it is essential to analyze your music files. The analyze files function processes the music in your library to detect file corruption, build and save waveform overview to an ID3 tag, and calculate auto-gain, key and BPM values (if these options are selected).

Analyze your files

To analyze files you will need to run your Serato software in Offline mode. Disconnect your Serato DJ hardware and you will see the Analyze Filesbutton appear above the library. Click the Analyze Files button to start the analysis of all the music that has been added to your Serato library.

Each time you use the Analyze Files function, Serato software will only analyze files that have not previously been analyzed. You can stop the Analyse Files process at any time by clicking the Anaylze Files button again.

TIP: If the software starts analyzing files which you know have already been analyzed, stop the process by clicking the Analyze Files button. Next, click the Rescan ID3 Tags button found within the Files panel and allow it to finish. This will ensure that only non-analyzed files get processed. You can now start the analyzing process again.

You can also drag and drop individual folders or crates onto the Analyze Files button to force the software to analyze only these files. This is a quick way to make sure all your important folders are analysed when getting ready for a gig.

When the analyze files function starts, the number of files that need to be analyzed are shown within the upper left corner of the panel.

The track name (and location) are displayed in the bars immediately above the button. The first bar shows track reading progress, the second bar shows waveform overview building, corruption/damage detection, auto-gain and BPM calculation, and the third bar shows tag writing progress.

Depending on how many files need processing, file analysis may take a while to complete. If at any time you need to stop the process, simply click the Analyze Files again. When you're ready to continue the process, click the Analyze File button and the analyzer will pick up where it left off.

If you are unable to complete the analysing of your files, then we would recommend viewing the article explaining how to resolve this: Troubleshooting freezing and crashing while Analyzing Files.

Analysis Settings

Click the Analysis Settings button to open configurable options for your analyzation. Here you can choose what kind of track information Serato DJ will analyze.

Checking Set Key will detect a key from the track and add key tag data to the track. Key display options can be found in the SETUP screen, under the "Library + Display" tab.

Checking Set Beat Grid/BPM will detect the tracks BPM and create a beat grid.

If you know your file’s BPM will fall within a certain range, use the BPM Range drop down to avoid double or half value BPMs being calculated.

The auto BPM function will not be applied if the track already contains BPM information. If you know the current BPM information is wrong, double click on the BPM tag for the track and delete the BPM value before re-analyzing. To re-analyze these files and calculate an auto BPM or auto gain value, drag them onto the Analyze Files button.

Clicking Analyze Entire Library will remove analysation data from all your tracks and force Serato DJ to analyse all of your tracks again. If "Set Beat Grid/BPM" is checked you will lose any edited beatgrids.

TIP: You can also CTRL + Click the Analyze Files button to force analyse all your tracks.

Corrupt Files

If a corrupt file is detected during analysis, your Serato software will tag the track with a corrupt file icon. It is very important that you delete ANY corrupt files from your library as they can cause the software to crash regardless if you play the file or not.

To delete a song from the library, click on the song to select it and use the keyboard shortcut Control + Delete (make sure the 'Protect Library' option within the setup screen Library tab is off).

More Information About Corrupt Files

If you have a corrupt file in your library, hover your mouse over the status icon (lightning bolt icon) for more information about the specific corruption type. It is best to replace these corrupt files as soon as possible.

Corrupt file: This MP3 contains invalid frames.

This MP3 contains frames which do not conform strictly to the official MP3 specification. The software can not be certain that this file will play back 100% accurately.

Corrupt file: This file contains corrupt frames that may result in audible glitches.
This file contains two or more contiguous corrupt frames. Since corrupt frames are replaced with silence, this could result in what might sound like an audio glitch.

Corrupt file: This file has been split. You should check the beginning for audio glitches.
The first MPEG audio frame in this file refers to audio that should be present before it but is not. This is usually the result of incorrect MP3 editing. Since a corrupt frame is replaced with silence and most songs start with silence, the resulting silence might not be noticeable. All the same, listen to the beginning of the song, just to be sure.

Corrupt file: This MP3 contains frames with corrupt data. Decoding of an MPEG audio frame failed. This means that the frame contained invalid data. As usual with corrupt frames, this frame will be played as silence.

Corrupt file: This MP3 lost syncronization between the frame index and the frames. The Serato software is reading an old overview of an MP3 that has been edited in a third party editing program. Re-building the overviews for the affected files usually corrects this error.

Corrupt file: This MP3 is completely invalid and is not playable. Self explanatory. Possible causes are disk bad sectors, file system corruption, wrong file types, wrong file extensions, etc.

Corrupt file: This file contains invalid audio data. The software encountered invalid data while looking for audio in this file. This message alerts you to the fact that the file you're trying to play contains corrupt data. This may, or may not, affect playback.

Corrupt file: This MP3 contains no valid frames. No audio could be found in this file, which means it is completely unplayable as far as the software is concerned. Please make sure this really is an audio file.

Unsupported file: This MP3 contains multiple layers. While scanning this file, the software found frames belonging to multiple MPEG layers. Serato software does not support MP3s containing frames from multiple layers – some frames may output as silence.

Unsupported file: This file is more than 2 GB in size. Self explanatory. At the moment, Serato software does not support files that are 2 GB in size (or larger).

Unsupported file: This file has data blocks greater than 2 GB in size. This file contains chunks of data that are larger than 2 GB. Serato software does not support files that are more than 2 GB in size.

Corrupt file: This WAV contains no valid chunks. This WAV file contains no recognizable WAV data. It is quite possible that this might not be a WAV file.

Unsupported file: This file's data is not in PCM format. WAV files can contain data in several formats. Serato software only supports WAV files that contain data in the PCM format.

Unsupported file: This file has a sampling rate greater than 48 kHz. Serato software does not support sampling rates greater than 48 kHz. If you see this message, the simplest approach is to re-sample the audio at 48 kHz and re-save the file.

Unsupported file: This file uses more than 24 bits per sample. Serato software supports a maximum of 24 bits per sample of audio data.

Serato DJ 1.9.5  is now in public beta, adding Club Kit support for the Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2 and HID mode support for the CDJ-2000NXS2 as an Official Serato Accessory, as well as a number of minor changes and stability improvements.

  • Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2.
  • Pioneer DJ CDJ-2000NXS2.
  • Bug fixes and some memory optimisations.

Matt Cleland (Serato Product Planner) says: “This update is huge for working club DJs as it provides support for two pieces of kit that many DJs will encounter on a nightly basis. With the Serato DJ Club Kit license, DJs can now connect directly to the Pioneer DJ DJM-900NXS2 mixer without the need for a separate interface. Two USB connections on this mixer also means changeover is easier than ever. As well as this, the CDJ-2000NXS2 will also control Serato DJ in HID mode via USB connection. We encourage any DJs wanting to give this a go early, to test out the beta and give us their feedback.”

Join the Serato DJ 1.9.5 public beta to try this update early and give feedback.

This release also includes a number of important stability improvements for all Serato DJs. Read the full list of bug fixes, changes and additions in the Serato DJ 1.9.5 beta area.

Beat Jump is a feature in Serato DJ that allows you to instantly jump forward or backwards in your track by a pre-determined amount, perfectly in time. This feature is great for giving yourself more time to mix, jumping straight to the hook and skipping that slow section in the track.

  • To enable this feature, first make sure you've got the latest update to Serato DJ.
  • Open the Serato DJ setup screen, and select "Show Beat Jump Controls" in the DJ Preferences tab.
  • You will see the Beat Jump controls underneath your looping controls. You can choose your Beat Jump amount and hit the arrow forwards or backwards to make the jump. This is quantised so if you hit it out of time, it'll sound smooth and perfectly in time.

Supported controllers with sets of 8 performance pads, will be able to access Beat Jump controls in Auto-Loop or Loop Roll mode on the bottom 4 performance pads (when Beat Jump is enabled in the Setup screen. The two outside pads will control shifting the playhead backwards or forwards, while the two inside pads control the Beat Jump value.

If you have Loop Shift controls on your hardware, these will become Beat Jump controls when it's enabled in Setup. For more info on hardware controls for your device, download your controller Quickstart Guide.

If you have any problems or need further help with this or any other Serato DJ features, please open a help ticket for our support team. They'll help out out!

Dedicated to his good friend Big Makk, DJ Nonames of Foreign Beggars has put together this mix for SeratoCast Mix 59. Cue this one up to play at your next party or turn it up right now! You won't be disappointed.

"This one took me a minute, i've been producing a lot lately so I wanted to spend some time listening to new music and put together something that touched on all corners of what im into in 2016, and made sense musically. As always recorded live between Technics, CDJs, and my trusty DJM909 via Serato. I made the intro the day after Skepta won his Mercury prize, Dabbla and Illaman peppered it with some bars and I threw some other acapellas and shouts from my iphone in there. The last one is from the late great Big Makk aka Samisoni Koroitamudu. Rest up brother."

Whether you're adding your custom DJ drops, blasting airhorns or setting off the dub siren, the Serato Sampler is your best friend. One of the older features of Serato DJ software, the original SP-6 was first introduced back in April 2009 in Scratch Live 1.9 but has recently been updated to include two extra slots, as well as a number of changes to the design for better usability.

There's a few different ways you'd use samples as a DJ:

  • DJ drops / stings - to drop your custom radio sting, advertising, shout outs from Lil Jon etc.
  • Transition FX - risers, sweeps and other FX like explosions are used a lot by DJs when transitioning tracks as you might want to stop and change tempo, or completely change the mood of the set. These can also be userful for DJs that play for rappers when you want to cut the song (cue gunshot samples).
  • Sound FX - Most often than not this is either an airhorn, a dub siren or a variation on that theme. Lion roars work well too :)
  • Loops - If you're playing a lot of minimal techno or similar styles of music where there is room for layering your own sounds on top, you may want to have a collection of loops in your library to add interest. With Sync, you can make sure your loops are on point and will ride on top of the track you're playing. Shakers, hi-hats and even kick loops can be used to subtly add some energy to a track. You can also make loops of tracks in your library and drag these to SP-6 slots, allowing you to sample your own music.
  • Drums / one-hits - For your Araab Musiks, your Lex Lugers etc... The drum sample is used for exactly what you think - finger drumming! Either use one-hits from sample packs, or drums from tracks in your library set on cue points (using the "start from feature" mentioned below).

As there are many different ways to use samples while DJing, it's important to be organised and use Sample Banks to hold different sets of samples. In Serato DJ, you can have 4 banks of 8 samples each. You can easily switch between banks by using the A,B,C,D buttons.

For example, you may want to have one bank set up with your radio stings, one bank with sounds FX, one with drums and one bank with your transitions.

Finding Samples

This question comes up a lot online in many DJ Facebook groups, forums, Twitter etc. Where do you find samples? Here are a few different options:

  • Your friends / other DJs - Try asking around! Chances are, there's one person in your immediate DJ circles that has an airhorn sample. Doing sample swaps is a good way to share also.
  • Make them yourself - If you already are doing a bit of production or dabble with synthesisers, it's relatively easy to play around and make some cool transition FX. Just search for some basic tutorials online if you're starting out and experiment.
  • Online sample banks / content providers - This is the most obvious source. There are many online providers of sample content (some better than others) and you can get mostly anything relatively easily. Free services may tend to have lower quality content or less choice, while premium services such as Loopmasters will have a huge catalogue of samples, ready for professional use.
  • Your music  - You can always go the classic route, and sample your own music. Whether it's a loop, or a series of vocal cuts you've assigned using cue points (and "play from") settings, it's an easy way to use music in another way in your sets. You can even drop a full track into an SP-6 slot, which will keep playing - freeing up your virtual decks.

Check out some free sample content available for Serato DJs.

The Serato Sampler

Open the Serato Sampler by hitting the Sampler button located at the top of the screen within Serato DJ. You can load samples to slots by dragging from your library directly to the slot, or from the Virtual Deck.

Performance vs Advanced View

You can switch between a simple performance view of the Serato Sampler, or an advanced view that gives you access to many different settings. Use the advanced view while preparing your banks so that it's set up nicely for quick and easy performance when your at the club.

Use the arrow button to the left of the Sampler to switch between these view modes.

Play Modes

The Sampler slots have a few different play options, which can be set to the right of the sample slot. You can choose from Trigger Mode, Hold Mode and On / Off Mode. Hit the play mode button to cycle through these.

  • Trigger Mode will play the sample entirely through from one touch - you can't stop the sample once it's been triggered but hitting the sample again, will start it playing again. This is useful for things like drums and one-hits where you want to be able to hit multiple times in a row quickly.
  • Hold Mode will play the sample for as long as you hold down on the play button / performance pad.
  • On / Off Mode plays the sample entirely through, until you hit the performance pad / play button again, which will stop the sample and return you to the beginning.

Each of these play modes is useful depending on what you're doing. Have a play around and figure out what's best for what you're using it for.

Play From

Use the 'Play From' selector to choose where the track will play from. You can choose to play a track from the start of the file, any one of the Cue Points, or any one of the loop in points.

When this is set to play from start, or play from a Cue Point, the track will play from this position. If a loop is selected in the Play From Selector the track will play from this position. The loop will repeat if repeat is enabled for the slot.

The number of options will be dependent on the number of Cue Points and Loops already set in your track. i.e. if the track loaded has no Cue Points and Loops set, then only “start” will be available as a “Play From” option.

TIP To set or adjust Cue Point and Loop information for a track, load it to a Virtual Deck, make your adjustments, then load it back into the sample slot.

Sync

The Serato Sampler now supports Simple Sync - to sync sample slots to your playing decks, just hit the SYNC button at the bottom of each slot :)

Audio Output and FX Routing

You can find the audio output settings to the left hand side of the Sampler, and depending on your hardware, you will have options to send the Sampelr output through one channel, multiple channels or the master.

If you're wanting to use FX (reverbs and echo are great!) on your samples, just route the Sampler to a spare channel on your mixer / controller and then make sure your FX are assigned to these channels.

Easy!

For more information of the Serato Sampler and a full overview of functionality, please refer to the Serato DJ user guide here.

Find the key that fits! Logan from Serato HQ discusses harmonic mixing and how you can easily use the key shifting and key sync tools in Serato DJ to make your mixes sound smoother than ever.

Serato DJ now has key detection / display as well as updates to Pitch 'n Time DJ, allowing DJs to shift the root key of their track and also sync this with the other deck. What this means is that your mixes can now sound perfect every time. If you've ever mixed two tracks and thought, "THIS SOUNDS SO HOT OMG," it's probably because the two tracks were in key.

As you might have seen in the media, iconic London club Fabric might have to close its doors and we don't want to see that happen. Fabric is a staple in London nightlife and has been open since 1999, had over 5000 artists perform and seen countless artists gain chart success after breaking tunes there.

Recently Fabric has been in the spotlight after two tragic drug-related deaths and the subsequent suspension of their license that's closed the venue until the local Islington council meets to decide on its future.

With support from over 50,000 DJs as well as the Mayor of London, the #SaveFabric campaign is in full swing to stop the loss of even more London nightlife but still needs more support.

Styles upon styles upon styles... This month we are honoured to celebrate the 5-Foot Assassin's legacy with "Nutshell", a Serato x Phife Dawg pressing.

"Nutshell" comes as a 2x12 pair and pays homage to the late legend's treasured team, the New York Knicks. The artwork features Phife, front and back, sporting Knicks gears, while the vinyl comes in signature Knicks' blue and orange with a marbled effect.

Comprising three Phife Dawg cuts, the pressing includes "Nutshell" produced by J Dilla, as well as the exclusive track "French Kiss" feat Illa J, produced by Potatohead People. It then comes full circle with "Dear Dilla", Phife's touch tribute to the late and great beatmaker, produced by Dj Rasta Root and V Rich.

Only a very limited number of these were pressed. Get in quick while they're still up for grabs.
